Executive Summary
Since 2000, Wide Angle Youth Media has delivered free and accessible creative youth development and workforce programming in Baltimore. Wide Angle equips youth from historically underinvested neighborhoods with media arts skills and tools (photography, videography, design) to capture, document, and write the stories of our time. We serve over 500 young people ages 10-24 annually, amounting to 8,295+ across our history. Wide Angle’s programs are an important educational supplement that builds interpersonal, academic, creative, and workforce-readiness skills. Wide Angle students graduate high school, attend college, and move into high-quality jobs at higher rates than their peers. They have produced thousands of projects and inspired millions of audience members. This new generation of media makers are civically engaged, socially networked, and fully prepared to lead in a variety of sectors.
Wide Angle is governed by a board that includes alumni, participant parents, and community members with similar lived experiences to youth participants. Young adults (under the age of 25) on Wide Angle's staff hold key roles, working in productions, communications, and education positions. They are active in discussions around organizational values, decision-making processes determining what stories to tell and how to tell them, and providing mentorship and instruction to younger student participants. Amplifying youth voice is central to Wide Angle’s mission, shaping its programs as well as the daily operations and long-term vision of the organization.
