Executive Summary
Launched in 2019, Represent Justice turns stories into action to change the justice system, while building the capacity of communities impacted by incarceration. We partner with community-based organizations and leaders to build narrative power at the local level, and to uplift equity-based solutions to ending mass incarceration and achieving public safety. And we partner with creative distribution channels as well as advocates campaigning across the country to achieve national impact.
Specifically, we develop and implement Films & Series Impact Campaigns, and Original Content, authored and produced by system-impacted communities. Through these two storytelling programs we mobilize audiences to action, with a focus on advancing justice for youth and women. Across both storytelling verticals, more than 200,000 online supporters have taken 542,000 advocacy actions, with more than 1 million people impacted through legislation passed with direct Represent Justice involvement. And Represent Justice story content has received over 5,000,000 views.
Central to this work is the Represent Justice Ambassador Program, made up of 39 prominent nonprofit leaders, advocates, and artists, who have collectively served nearly 500 years in our nation’s prison system. Each Ambassador has a desire to grow their personal storytelling skills while also wanting to leverage those skills to disrupt harmful narratives and to advocate for change in the justice system.
Reflecting the communities we serve, the Represent Justice team is majority people of color and includes directly-impacted experts and movement leaders—a critical part of ensuring our strategies and activities stay true to our mission and vision.
