Executive Summary
For over 27 years, Nebraska Appleseed has fought for justice and opportunity for all Nebraskans. We create systemic change by building power with, elevating the voices of, and advocating alongside community members with lived experiences to tackle interconnected injustices and barriers to opportunity: poverty, discrimination, racism and other inequities. Core constituencies include workers paid low wages and families experiencing poverty (11% of Nebraska, or 216,000 people); immigrants and refugee Nebraskans (144,000 people); and youth and families who have experience in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems (10,000+ youth). Our efforts focus in four core areas: poverty, child welfare, immigration, and health care. We approach these interrelated issues holistically because no one lives their lives within a single ‘issue area.’ Our staff and board include people who have personal lived experience with these issues and hold identities of immigrants, refugees, and historically marginalized racial, ethnic and LGBTQ+ groups. We partner with community members living the problems first-hand who have a vision for change they want to see in their community. We bring our multidisciplinary expertise as community organizers, lawyers, and policy experts to support community leadership, elevate community voices, and work together to create systemic change. Once a change is won, our legal expertise allows us to monitor implementation and defend Nebraskans’ rights. Our vision is to ensure that public systems and policy provide people who have experienced injustice and inequity with the rights, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive, fully participate, and belong.Organization Details
