Executive Summary

FLIC was founded in 1998 to protect and uplift immigrants in Florida, and has become a bold movement working to dismantle systemic barriers to immigrant inclusion and to create a representative and accountable democracy. Through issue advocacy, consciousness raising and community building programs, we co-create opportunities for our constituents to thrive.

FLIC’s strategic priorities, including the scope and direction of our work, are co-defined by our membership, and our work reflects the needs and aspirations of our members in three core areas:

1. Reclaiming governance - we expand democracy by promoting naturalization and by helping New Americans to register to vote and to become civically engaged. Through issue-advocacy we promote pro-immigrant policies, and we help Floridians to connect with their elected officials for testimonials.

2. Expanding consciousness - we combat mis- and disinformation, and rigorously promote non-partisan political education. We uplift the voices of those bearing the biggest burdens of inequality through storytelling and we promote inclusion through language justice.

3. Building a “bigger we” - we meet our communities’ most urgent needs through direct services, which include free legal screening clinics, an emergency cash assistance fund, and know your rights education. We also bridge diverse constituencies through community building events.

These initiatives have delivered multiple wins including 12,000+ gaining the right to vote through naturalization, wage-theft protections for workers, and access to in-state college tuition for immigrant youth. Our success results from being led by the communities we serve, counting on a vast network of volunteers, and having an incredibly mission-driven team.
