Executive Summary
Since its founding in 2013, Detroit People’s Platform (DPP) has united local organizations and worked in solidarity with thousands of residents to organize for racial and economic justice and public policies affecting the nation’s largest majority Black city. Situated at the epicenter of racial and economic justice work, a “win” in Detroit often extends beyond the city’s boundaries with implications for Black and low-income communities across Michigan and nationally. DPP’s campaigns are viewed as model initiatives and have been replicated throughout Michigan, most recently in Ypsilanti, MI. DPP’s multi-pronged approach incorporates the following strategies: 1. Collective organizing and coordination of issue-based campaigns; door-to-door/phone canvassing. 1. Creating a pipeline for civic and community engagement through leadership development, organizing, and skills-building trainings for members and resident leaders. 1. Amplifying the voice of Black Detroiters through press and social media outreach, narrative and storytelling development, public advocacy targeting elected officials, a quarterly newspaper, and policy education reports. 1. Working in coalition and partnership with affiliate organizations and agencies at the local, state, and national levels to advance critical solutions on racial and economic equity. DPP is deeply embedded in residents’ communities and is recognized as an ally whose work is *driven* by member-identified priorities, not the other way around. DPP is there to serve as a backbone and provide the infrastructure needed to make progress on resident-led campaigns and initiatives.Organization Details
