Executive Summary
The Center for Black Women’s Wellness (CBWW) is an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of underserved Black women and their families through the delivery of community-based, accessible healthcare and programs to advance health equity. With an over 35-year history, we commit ourselves to providing: 1) free or low cost healthcare to the uninsured, 2) prenatal home visiting to improve the health outcomes of mothers and babies; and 3) financial literacy and micro-business training to improve women's economic self-sufficiency.
CBWW is the only arranger and provider of healthcare services in our neighborhood and our location within a community center provides a setting less intimidating than a traditional clinic. CBWW is a trusted resource in its community, collaborates with the community to plan and implement interventions, is comprised of a staff and board largely reflective of its clientele, and has solid partnerships which aid in program implementation. Our staff composition is 97% Black and 100% female. Our 12-member board is 83% Black and 83% female. Our shared lived experience of being marginalized and historically oppressed gives an important lens and shapes our work.
With around 3,000 individuals served annually through core programs and services, examples of our contributions to wellbeing include improved access to and utilization of physical health, mental health, social and other related services; increased entry into prenatal care in the first trimester; increased linkages to a medical home; high client satisfaction rates; increased self-advocacy among case managed participants; and strengthened coordination amongst area providers.
