Executive Summary
The first 1001 days of a child’s life are crucial to lay the earliest foundations for good health and child development. Children in disadvantaged communities are behind developmentally when they reach primary school, impacting negatively on their life prospects.
Building on eight years of independently evaluated achievements in local communities, CityCare will deploy Family Mentors to deliver the "Small Steps at Home Programme," an evidence-based program of preventative health advice and child development support to parents to nurture their children (aged 0-2) and help them to thrive, improve communication & language, social & emotional development, and nutrition outcomes. Family Mentors are local people with experience in raising families in disadvantaged communities, highly trained in behavior change, parenting, and trauma-aware approaches.
The Family Mentor service is bespoke to Nottingham, was coproduced by the community it serves, and its unique delivery model incorporates clinical evidence into a welcoming and highly accessible service.
